Which Are the Highest-Paid Premier League Players Per Season?
When it comes to European football, the Premier League is probably the best and most popular one among them. But most see it as the richest league in the world as well. Thanks to exclusive TV rights and sponsorship deals, the Premier League clubs have been able to learn significantly more than most, even more than some champions from other leagues.
With so much monetary potential, the teams have been able to pay their players more than some. This is the prime reason why the Premier League hosts so many foreign players and why probably the best players in the world eventually end up playing there. Today, we are here to discuss the highest-paid Premier League players per season and whether they have been able to justify all the money put into them.
2022/23, 2023/24 – Kevin De Bruyne
During the last two seasons, Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been at the top of the highest-paid football players in Premier League list. Kevin has definitely deserved the money invested in him. Particularly last season as he helped the Citizens get to their third title in a row. Even finishing the season as the top assist-maker with 16.
Since then, De Bruyne has suffered a few injuries, causing him to miss the better part of the 2023/24 season. He came back with an assist and a goal in just 20 minutes to help the City win against Newcastle. Showing why he earns £400,000 per week.
2021/22 – Cristiano Ronaldo
During the 2021/22 season, Cristiano Ronaldo made a miraculous return to Old Trafford. He was meant to be the ace in the hole that the Red Devils needed to turn their season around. For that reason, paying him £480,000 per week seemed like a no brainer.
Unfortunately, being among the highest paid players in Premier League does not guarantee success all the time. Cristiano’s second stay with Man Utd will be one that he would rather forget. He left the club on bad terms despite scoring 18 goals during the half-season he was there.
2020/21 – Gareth Bale
Similarly to Ronaldo, Gareth Bale came back to the Spurs for a single season, at a salary of £560,000 per week. Luckily for Tottenham, they were paying him only 40% of his whole earnings.
Bale made us remember the good old days as he scored 16 goals in all competitions. Even scoring a hat trick against Sheffield United. He helped the Lillywhites earn a Europa Conference League spot. But then went back to Madrid where his career continued to nosedive.
2019/20 – David de Gea
David de Gea definitely deserved the £375,000 per week at Old Trafford during the 2019/20 season. He has been consistently one of the best players on an awful Manchester United squad. De Gea was the best goalkeeper of the season and made the most clear sheets during the season.
However, he too would leave on bad terms. The Red Devils didn’t want to give him the money that he deserved, so he decided to leave. Since then, he has been out of contract.
